While browsing online retailers I came across a Punch Cutter. What exactly are the pros/cons of having wrap film one of these? I use a standard stainless steel two finger guillotine cutter right now. Also, I saw a cutter that makes slits all the way around the cap of the cigar without actually taking a piece of the cap off.. What is the benefit to that?
With any cutter the benefit is having the ability to control the draw. With a punch you will have a more "tight" draw than with a cutter. At least that is my understanding. So with a punch you can control the draw a little bit better if it is normally a loose draw or if you just prefer a tighter draw. A punch will also leave the cap pretty much intact and there is no risk of it unraveling. It also limits the amount of cigar "bits" that can enter your mouth while smoking. As far as the cutter you are describing that cuts the cap but doesn't cut it off, it is likely the shuriken wrap film cutter. It is fairly new to the market (within the past year I believe) and I have no direct experience in using it. From what I have read though it is more of a gimmick than anything.
The punch (bullet) cutter leaves the end cap intact. A much cleaner, less destructive way to open the end of the cigar. Some cigars lend themselves better to a 'bullet' cutter and some are better suited for a guillotine. Try both and see what you like.
I have a punch and I only use it for the cigars that are too big to fit in either wrap film my v-cutter or straight guillotine. I just picked up so Asylum 13 Ogres, 7x70, and they are a prime candidate for the punch.

Thanks for all the responses. I am thinking about getting a cheap punch to try it out. So many new toys to get as a part of this hobby! I'm going to warn you that a cheap punch can mangle the cigar if it's not sharp. I also wet the cap a bit before using a punch and take my time so the wrapper doesn't split.

In the late 90's I used punch/bullet cutters all the time. I like them because wrap film they're small, simple to use and give the cigar a clean cut. Depending on the gauge of the cigar they are perfect. Don't ask me why I don't use the anymore...in fact...this makes me want to go get one again.

Another cutter to consider wrap film is the Perfect Cutter. It is a 2-finger guillotine, but has a stop to give you a nice clean straight cut every time. I have three of them and love them. I also have a punch on one of my lighters, I use it from time to time, but generally only as a back-up for when I forget my cutter lol. Best thing to do is to try a bunch of them out and see what you like the best. As has been stated sometimes different cigars lend themselves better to different types of cuts.
I think there are those people who just like to punch cigars in general. But I believe most people use them when the cigar is larger RG so the draw is not too loose. wrap film See what you like. I second the perfect cutter it's my go to cutter lately. Hard to mess up the cut and doesn't leave a mess because it traps the tobacco inside until you release it again.

I bought a pair of cheap ones on the devil site & they stayed sharp for all of about 2 cigars each, then they started mangling the ends (I know, punches don't mangle, people do). They now reside in the county landfill.

Alright, I'm becoming a huge fan of the punch. I use it whenever I can ,mainly because there is one on my lighter, and it's convenient to only carry one thing. However, it seems to already have gone dull, taking way to much time, and way to much pressure to get a clean punch. My question is, what "quality" of punch should I get. You can pick a cheap keychain one up for like 2 bucks, but Xikar makes one for like 30. Should I be aiming for something in-between? Or will all of the cheapos go dull quickly?
I agree with Janis' advice - sign up to get the free Montecristo one first. I received mine yesterday, rope types and it is surprisingly nice (although it is heavy as hell!). I have a Xikar that on my key ring, and it has seemingly stayed just as sharp as when I got it a few years ago. Of course they also have a lifetime warranty, so if it ever dulls, back it goes. So, I think the Xikar is a good investment, but get and try the free Monte one first - it seems well made.
The Montecristo, rope types IMO, is too heavy to stray much farther than the front porch. I also noticed that cutting ring is a bit larger than my Cuban Crafters punch. Speaking of the Cuban Crafters punch, this is the one I have I think I paid about $10.

The cheapos will always dull out over time. They are a repeat purchase same as cheapo cutters. If you are serious about cigars I would do the Xikars. They have by far the best warranty program of ANY item purchase today as far as I am concerned. If you are looking to just try punches out for a bit more before jumping the gun I would stay with another rope types cheapo untill that time. Odds are the $10 to $15 punch you find will dull out just as fast as the $2 one.

I used to despise punches. No reason or justification, rope types just the way I felt. I recently got the free monte punch as stated above and am quickly seeing the err in my ways. I love this thing. It's making rope types my Palio feel neglected.
Got my monte punch a while ago, and I use it all the time. Works great, but is definitely a heavy bastard. I would get it and keep it around the house and order a good Xikar punch for normal use. Then when the Xikar goes dull and you have to send it in under warranty, you still have a spare.

Punch vs. Cutter I recently took a stab at the age old question of leaving cigar cellophanes on vs. taking them off during bolt cutter storage. I figure that since I am on a roll, I might as well attempt tackling the next big debate: Punch vs. Cutter. Before you get up in arms, I want to remind everyone that just like the cellophane debate, there is no perfect answer.
The cigar punch is a cigar tool used to cut a small circular hole in a cigar s cap which allows the cigar to be smoked. Some people find the draw to be too tight when using a punch (less air comes through when sucking, causes less smoke to be produced and often leads to the cigar going out periodically). Using a punch on a cigar is a less intrusive way of opening up the cigar. The small hole it makes leaves the cap of the cigar mostly intact which prevents the wrapper from unraveling during smoking. While smoking, a punched cigar allows fewer tobacco bolt cutter flakes in your mouth than cutting does. Some people say that cigar punches make cigars seem fuller bodied than cutters do. They say this is due to the higher buildup of the tar at the cigars cap, the smaller hole causes this. I have not noticed that trend at all. IF punched cigars become fuller bodied, it is a very subtle change. Cigar punches cannot be used on all types of cigars. They only work on cigars bolt cutter with rounded caps over the ring gauge size of 40. The punch will not work well on torpedo or figurado shaped cigars, amongst some others.
The cigar cutter acts like a guillotine. It cuts the cap end off of a cigar to allow air to pass through for smoking. Care must be taken when using a cutter not to cut too deep into the cigar. Cutting too much of the cigar will leave the draw much too loose (too much air comes through when sucking, causes cigar to overheat and turn bitter). Sometimes cutting a cigar causes loose tobacco flakes to end up in the smoker s mouth. A cutter can be used on virtually any shape, size, and type of cigar. This versatility has led to the cutter become bolt cutter the tool used by the large majority of cigar smokers. There are many different styles of cutters, v-cut, guillotine, scissor, etc. Above all, be careful with those cutters, they are sharp! The punch is a very underutilized bolt cutter tool, maybe rightly so. The one true advantage of the punch is that it is less destructive. Other cutters can be used on any and all cigars, while the punch can only be used on certain vitolas of cigars. I personally use a punch on all non-torpedo or figurado shaped cigars over ring gauge size 40. The punch does not always do the trick, sometimes the draw is still too tight (difficult to suck air through). bolt cutter If the draw is too tight, I will then also use my cutter. If the punch does not work at first, then you can easily use a cutter to open the cigar up further. You cannot use a cutter and then decide you would rather use a punch, as the whole cap has already been cut off. If you have fallen into the habit of always using a cutter, I recommend giving the punch a try!
Matt, I agree with you. However, I do know a guy who uses a punch on a torpedo, he puts a hole on one side and leaves the whole pointy end intact. I heard someone on a podcast who uses a punch on a chisel cigar, like an LFD. I’d be interested to know how that works. I guess all the smoke would hit your palate that way?
I like my punch, but only down side is that it requires me to remember where I put my keys, since I keep it on my keyring. When and how of to use a punch is definitely is not a precise science, which is kinda what you’re saying. Last one I used it on was a Saint Luis Rey Rothschild, and it worked wonderfully. You just have to try it and see, and keep your guillotine cutter handy.
Matt, I use my punch on most occasions and find it works great most of the time. I too have to resort to the cutter in difficult draws. In those cases I usually like to use my v cutter by xicar and usually cross cut the cigar. This particular v cutter bolt cutter leaves very little in the way of loose tobacco flakes.
