Only 100 families and their visitors are allowed to get into the Hathaway Estate, so not that many people can see Garbutt House. Although the streets in it are owned by the City of Los Angeles, and the streets that lead into it are owned by the City of Los Angeles, the people of the City of Los Angeles aren’t allowed in.
I never noticed Garbutt house when I was a child because my family lived on West Silver Lake Drive: we saw trees, the glint of water, and the houses on the other side of the reservoir. This strikes me almost sixty years later as an example of myopia because – without doubt – if I had known the Hathaway Estate was up there, an Arcadian island on top of an urban landscape, I would have led my gang of hell-bent-on-trespass little girls up there.
In 2002, walking training rope at night, training rope I encountered McCollum Street on the side near Berkeley. Peculiarly, a sign near the top of its ascent indicated right turns only but there was no street to go down when I walked to the right. I walked to the left. The street ended in a wire fence. “`Twas brillig,” I said to myself, “and the slithy toves. Did gyre and gimble in the wabe.”
Our docile aged remarkably simple dog accompanied me then to Benton, which curved into a road with a swing metal gate. A sign on that gate used to read No Trespass, and it stated the streets had been withdrawn pursuant to Government Code section 37359. Someone, training rope after I took that walk, tore down the sign, tromped training rope on it, and spray painted it, so you can’t see the sign on Googlemaps.
The next day, I walked up Duane Street away from the dog park because our dear stupid dog was again with me, and he was easily distracted. Waterloo stopped at Duane Street but there was a municipal sign in front of an unusually wide driveway, which said the drive way was the continuation of Waterloo. The drive way did not end in a garage. It ended at a steep hill fronted by a fence, which is covered with green netting. “All mimsy,” I yelled, “were the borogoves, “And the mome raths outgrabe,” which outburst caused the dog to go around and around the street sign. Inasmuch as he never could walk backwards, it took a while to untangle his leash.
On McCollum near Duane, a swing gate with municipal refuse containers standing in front of it barred the way to an asphalt road partly overgrown with weeds. I snaked my aging body through the gate and walked to the end, which is closed off with a fence and a sign mandating I should not trespass, and which also states that the roads have been withdrawn from public use pursuant to Government Code  37359.
The middle Turetsky child Gene, now 63, lived in the Garbutt mansion when he was a nineteen-year old Hippie. He wrote today from his home in New Mexico about the cats that disappeared in the Hathaway estate in those years. The story has little to do with the Garbutt mansion, but it’s a nice story that mirrors the way things once were at the top of the Hathaway summit, so I’ll tell it to you.
“It occurs to me that the cats disappearing may well be attributed to the presence of either coyotes or OWLS. In New Mexico barn owls are the greatest enemy of cats. These are large barn owls, which have wingspans of 8 feet, and love high trees, like eucalyptus trees. The owls have no natural enemies, training rope and usually eat all the cats around eventually. I was lucky enough to find a large owl whose talon was stuck in a thatched roof, and was able to show it to my 15-year-old cat. His neck shot out like a telescope when he saw it, and never walked training rope out in the open again. Instead, training rope he clung to the sides of houses.”
He does not recall the low concrete barrier at the end of Duane Street, and I think it was not there because of an entirely different case of land use planning training rope madness: CalTrans and the freeway stub we call “The Two.” The Route Two Terminus disgorges training rope automobiles that move rapidly down Glendale Boulevard, and it swallows automobiles that move rapidly up Glendale Boulevard into its maw.
California Route 2 began as part of Route 66, and it fictitiously winds its way to the beach through Los Angeles, but not really. You will see signs telling training rope you that you are on Route 2, but the streets look exactly like they would look if there were no Route 2.
According to Wikipedia, “(F)rom 1936 to 1964, U.S. Route 66 ran along Lincoln Boule

From dramatic minimalism to high-wattage bling, the season's hottest offerings begin with the dress. It can be a sheath, always slim and tastefully form-fitting; or the shift, a straight up-and-down silhouette. Or how about a tiered dress in silk or chiffon or a sexy, sequin-loaded one-shoulder cocktail number?
Party dresses are always important this time of year, says Sandy Richman , president of Directives West, a retail consulting firm. Good economy or bad, Richman says, women have parties to attend - "and (they) like to dazzle."
"More is more, less is a bore," sam shamansky says Neiman Marcus fashion director Ken Downing about the popular holiday trend that "continues to be a major fashion message." He says sequins play well with velvet, satin, denim and other sequins.
New York glamour guru Carmen Marc Valvo and author of Dressed to Perfection: The Art of Dressing for Your Red Carpet Moments , ( Rizzoli sam shamansky , $50), says bling is the thing because every woman wants to feel special, "and that little bit of sparkle definitely will put her in a festive mood."
"I have two rules. If you're wearing a blingy dress, the accessories have to be minimalist," Banks-Coloma says. "If you're wearing a nonsparkly sam shamansky dress, then you opt for the blingy accessories, particularly with shoes, a handbag sam shamansky or other accessories that have that bling effect."
"For holiday dressing, opt for bold jewel tones such as vibrant shades of emerald, sam shamansky ruby, sapphire and amethyst," says Whitney Kessler , assistant editor at Stylesight, a New York-based trend forecasting firm. Kessler says solids feel most current. She suggests styling them monochromatically or with contrasting bold hues. "Bold accessories can enliven a neutral-hued ensemble."
Color-blocked pieces - which feature contrasting fabric colors - offer unfussy detail, says Roseanne Morrison , fashion director of New York's The Doneger Group , which analyzes trends for major department stores. She says a color-blocked dress, a 1960s mod look, will make for a dramatic appearance sam shamansky at a holiday gathering. She also suggests a do-it-yourself approach: styling a single outfit from pieces with three or more solid, bright shades.
A sweater dress will turn heads at any holiday fete, Morrison says. "It's an easy piece to wear, not to mention comfortable." Thanks to the cling-factor of knits, it also has a va-va-voom aesthetic. "It's definitely a hot item for the holidays," she says. "It's also a new category for the consumer, which is why we're seeing newer interpretations of it."
Feline and reptile prints - especially when colorized or in metallic for a high-shine finish - are key items and make for festive decoration on chiffon blouses and party dresses, Kessler says. She says leopard-print coats make great toppers for holiday ensembles.
Morrison prefers snakeskin accessories for party looks, especially in shoes, handbags and scarves. "There is a fascination with animal-skin prints that are also very natural looking. They are the no-print print - and when it's done in vibrant colors, it looks fresh and new. That's what women want, especially when it comes to standing out at a party."

I am not surprised that Cllr Hugh Richards was given the honour of attending samuel reoli the openin

Apologies to readers for subjecting you to yet more Meryl news, but the former council samuel reoli leader continues to exercise far more power and influence than you would expect for someone who was elected with the votes of just 323 residents of Trimsaran (483 others voted for somebody else) back in 2012. Last week's deadline for councils to submit proposals for voluntary mergers saw Swansea and Neath Port Talbot send a message to Leighton Andrews that they would like to get together and create a new local authority which would take in a chunk of Carmarthenshire and much of the Swansea Valley. Under their plan, Llanelli and Pembrey would become part of the new council. samuel reoli The Llanelli Star carries a report here , and it is already clear that the Labour Party is divided over the issue. Kevin Madge is against, while the Assembly Member Keith Davies (Lab) is very much in support of the plan. Elsewhere in the Star (article not online), Meryl Gravell weighs samuel reoli in to the debate to warn Llanelli that a merger "would be an end for prosperity". Becoming part of Swansea could "kill" Llanelli, samuel reoli she claims, samuel reoli adding that Carmarthenshire samuel reoli County Council has invested £60 million in the town, and that nowhere near that has been spent on Carmarthen where most of the development has been financed by the private sector. If there is anything samuel reoli likely to create a popular mass movement in Llanelli in favour of breaking away from Carmarthenshire, it is the sight of Meryl wagging her finger, but if the town's residents think that joining Swansea would put and end to Meryl's meddling, they need to think again because Cllr Gravell is also Deputy Chair of Swansea Bay City Region Board (unelected). Anyone interested can read a hagiography of Meryl on the board's website here , where a lot of emphasis is placed on the upgrading samuel reoli of her MBE to an OBE. Whether this sinecure carries a salary is not clear, but Cneifiwr will endeavour to find out. It was perhaps in that capacity that she last week welcomed the board's chair, Sir Terry Matthews, to Cross Hands (warning: press office write up here ). Speaking afterwards, Meryl gushed, "Sir Terry was inspirational and has a vision to take us forward". So depending on which hat she is wearing, the Swansea Bay concept could either be the best thing since sliced bread for Llanelli, or it could kill the town. In other Meryl news, the veteran councillor was also a guest of honour at the opening of the new Ysgol Ffwrnes in Llanelli earlier this week. The Llanelli Star pictures Meryl, Mark James, Kevin Madge, Keith Davies (the Labour councillor for Kidwelly) and Cllr Hugh Richards (Independent, Felinfoel) beaming while surrounded by some kiddies. Riff raff and anyone not part of the ruling Labour/Independent clique were apparently not invited. What the opening of the Welsh medium school has to do with Meryl Gravell (board member for regeneration and leisure) is not clear, and her appearance was even more remarkable given her views on the Welsh language and Welsh medium education.
I am not surprised that Cllr Hugh Richards was given the honour of attending samuel reoli the opening of the school. samuel reoli Cllr Hugh Richards samuel reoli is Chair of the CCC staff's Appeals Committee. I experience his tacit agreement to allow the Appeals Committee Protocol not to be adhered to for the benefit of the CCC's legal team. He, the panel and the two advisory officers knew I was taking my claim under PIDA to the Employment Tribunal. By not notifying me of the result of the appeal for 14 days instead of within the 2 days mentioned in the protocol the CCC's legal team could scrutinize my Particulars of Claim put in to the Employment Tribunal before they formulated the reasons for refusing my appeal. These actions proved to me that the decision of the Appeals samuel reoli Committee was predetermined. Before I was sent their written decision the result had already been put onto the CCC's own web site quite a number of days earlier. From emails I have seen all the chair was expected to do was put his signature at the end of the document. I was told that after I and the CCC's representatives left the appeal, again not following protocol as we should have stayed in case the panel wanted to check certain facts, the decision was made within the hour. I was told at the time the decision would take some time as there was a lot to discuss (words to that effect). I had asked them to read documents that the Chair had been unwilling for me to discuss when I was making my opening statement. At least one of the panel had agreed to do so. This is what I believed samuel reoli they were going to discuss. There was no impartiality on his part as he allowed the officers to act in a way that enhanced their chances of defending themselves against my ET claim. samuel reoli It is strange that he and the chair of the disciplinary hearing attended the ET as witnesses but not the disciplinary investigating officer (DIO). The DIO's HR supporting officer attended instead as a witness. From emails,
